Best Motorcycle Wax and How to Wax it

Which is the best motorcycle wax

Motorcycle Wax not only keeps your bike gleaming, it protects and prolongs the life of the body work. This is especially handy if you’re on a lease plan.

Now you have to choices when it comes to waxing your motorcycle.

Carnauba Wax

This is a natural wax produced in Brazil from the leaves of the ‘Copernicia Prunifera’ palm, all sounds a bit fancy, and it is. Caranauba Wax is the number one choice for most die hard Wax-ers. Due to its consistency and toughness once applied, it can withstand harsh weather conditions better than most.

Protection from Carnauba motorcycle wax can last anywhere from 3-4 months.

Paint Sealant Wax

If you’re looking for something a bit more long term, Paint Sealant wax is the one for you. Offering up to 8-9 months protection, which in bike years, is a very long time.

Synthetic waxes seal your paint and apply a protective ‘mock Carnauba’ glossy coat. It works by filling pores and irregular surface of the paint. Similar to the Carnauba wax the gloss coat is hydrophobic causing water to bead off and deters dirt from sticking and causing damage.

How to apply Motorcycle Wax

It can be more compelx than you first thought, but If Mr Miyagi hasn’t taught you yet, then follow the simple steps below:

Clean the surface
You need to make sure to strip the old motorcycle wax (if there is any) before you apply any new layers. This is not just good practice, but reduces the chance that previous wax affects your new coat. Griot’s Garage Paint Prep  is a great way to do this. Simply spray on and wait for 5-6 minutes before removing with a damp cloth.

Before applying your new layer of wax, ensure the paint is smooth to the touch. Run your fingers over it to feel any bumps or imperfections, If you feel any stuck on dirt, this needs to be removed first. You can use Windex/Windowline to easily remove stubborn bugs; spray it on a let it soften the dirt then wipe away.

Apply the wax
Once you have a clean, smooth and dry surface it’s time to apply the wax. Do so sparingly, it is easier to buff a thin layer to a shine, a thick layer will just create a streaky look and be harder to manage. Add a thin layer of wax to the body work and rub it in with a microfiber cloth, If you need to add another thin layer you can do so once the first layer has set (read the side of your product to see how long it takes to set)

Buff more!
Buff the thin layer of wax to a pristine shine, the excess wax will stick to the cloth so keep rotating to clean side/new cloth if required.

After enough buffing you should be able to see your own face in your tank, perfect!
